Neutropenic Sepsis Among Cancer Patients In a Tertiary Health Institution Ile Ife, Osun State Nigeria

This study assessed the prevalence of Neutropenic sepsis among cancer patient attending Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, the study also assesses the socio demographic factors influencing the prevalence of neutropenic sepsis among cancer patients, investigates the relationship between nutritional status and the prevalence of neutropenic sepsis among cancer patients, analyzes the type of cancers, assessed the risk factors and determines the nutritional status.
A total of two hundred (200) questionnaires were used to collect data from the medical records of 200 patients with reference to their case files available in the health record department. The data collection was done daily for three weeks and descriptive statistical techniques such as mean, frequency and percentage, Chi- square were used to analyze the findings of the study.
The overall prevalence of Neutropenic sepsis was 60.0%, it was highest in female (30.5%), in married (30.5%), 27.5% in aged 1-20 years (p= 0.019), 25.5 % in students ( p= 0.002), 23.0% among patients with tertiary education (p=0.024), 36.0% among patients that practice Christianity (p= 0.010), 48.0% among Yoruba (p= 0.000), the highest 23.0% Neutropenic sepsis was recorded in Leukaemia (p= 0.000), followed by 21.0% in Carcinoma (p= 0.000), 6.5% in Lymphoma (p= 0.001). 4.0% in Renal tumor (p= 0.054), 2.0% and in Sarcoma ( p=0.000), while 58.0% was recorded in underlying haematological malignancy, followed by 57.5% in intensity chemotherapy ( p= 0.000), and 2.5% in poor nutritional status (p= 0.003), 46.0% was recorded in Coagulopathy (p= 0.000),followed by 41.0% in Physical impairment, 26.5% in Death, 25.0% in organ failure, 5.0% in Neutropenic entercolitis ( p= 0.008) and the least 2.5% in Invasive and atypical infection, and 56.0% was recorded in none malnutrition.
The study concluded that there was high (60.0%) prevalence of Neutropenic sepsis and the main risk factors are poor nutritional status and intensity chemotherapy with Neutropenic entercolitis and Coagulopathy as the complications. Hence, there is the need for health education and create awareness of the disease and its risk factors to all age groups.
